First of all what do you actually mean with 1, 2, 3 and 4? If it are the NUMBERS 1, 2, 3, 4 then 2+2=4 always. the story about the bouncing ball and energy is just something totally different because a number on itself has no energy.
ok just ot make notation shorter: x = APPLE and y = ORANGE.
x/3 + y/3 + y/3 = x/3 + 2y/3 = (x+2y)/3
If you say (x+2y)/3 = x/y then thats not always true, its a sort of equation that you can try to solve.
